Clients Journey

Carolyn, Plymouth

A Kitchen Worth the Wait

When Carolyn and her husband began redesigning their Plymouth kitchen, their initial experience with another company was disappointing. The firm offered to give a quote without visiting the property. They decided to walk away and found their way to KF Kitchens. From their first visit to the showroom at Faraday Mill, the approach was different. As Carolyn said: "We had a look around and had a chat with them and we knew straight away that this was the place for us."

The Design Challenge

The existing layout split what could have been one spacious area into two separate rooms: a kitchen near the window and a dining room at the far end, separated by a wall. Wall cupboards and a dining table made the kitchen feel small and inefficient. Carolyn had her own ideas about what she wanted, but the constraints of the layout made it hard to see what was truly possible.

Nathan visited the property and helped redefine the scope of the project. As Carolyn put it: "When Nathan came around, he made suggestions and recommendations which gave me a much better idea about what we could do."

The Solution

The redesign involved removing the dividing wall to create a single large room, replacing a side door with a window and a new section of wall, enlarging the archway into the living room, and creating a hatchway between the kitchen and living room. Part of the original dining area was retained at the rear, with additional cupboards and a sink incorporated into the new layout.

Carolyn chose a contemporary Nolte kitchen in two colours: lava and flame scarfed oak. Appliances are from Siemens' high-end studioLine range, most Wi-Fi connected, and include a multi-function double oven with warming drawer, steam oven, and conventional oven, two extra-tall dishwashers, a fridge, and a freezer. The island incorporates an adjoining dining table and an induction hob with a downdraft extractor that lowers out of sight when not in use. Both sinks are by Blanco, with the main sink featuring a Quooker tap delivering hot, filtered cold, and boiling water, plus a food waste disposer. An artificial ceiling with integrated lighting above the island completes the specification.

Installation & Completion

All work was carried out by the contractors KF Kitchens, whom we have worked with for many years. Carolyn reflected on the process: "What I liked about the process was that you could go down to see Nathan and Derinda as many times as you like; they were always willing to see you. They offer flexibility, you could change or add things, giving you time and space to consider over several weeks. You don't need to make a final decision until two to three weeks before the installation. That's important for securing the final design you want. Then, the work and fitting went very smoothly; we were very pleased with the workmanship.”

The Result

The finished kitchen has transformed how Carolyn and her husband use the space daily. "It's much more functional, everything is within reach," she said. "It's all been fitted in the right places, so although it's a large kitchen, it has become easier and more enjoyable to work in. We also do a lot of entertaining, and we now have space in the kitchen for people to spill in from the living room, making it more social as well."

On the team: "Nathan and Derinda were so nice to work with, nothing is too much for them. They deliver a quality product with excellent customer service."
